We know the facts. Martin Lee Anderson’s death was caused by actions of professionals at the Bay County boot camp. We’ve seen the video. We’ve seen the community outrage at the absence of justice. Five months removed, no charges have been filed in connection with the 14 year-old’s death.

The magnitude of the problem we face as a state is inexpressible. The imminent problem: “Justice” has been vacationing in the summer sun, drinking lemonade, while state and national leaders, 1,500 demonstrators, the media and the soul of Martin Lee Anderson plead for its attention. The underlying problem: The men and women wearing badges and white coats seem to feel justified in committing felonies themselves behind the closed doors of these boot camps. Regardless of their distinct roles, they seem to exemplify similar mentalities when dealing with the children who are detained. Why did the guards and the medical examiner all respond with such little display of concern? Are the training policies and procedures used to certify these people as professionals creating an environment for rehabilitation or humiliation?

Where is the accountability? Frankly, it must be on vacation with justice, sipping margaritas. How bold, to submit autopsy results alleging Anderson’s bruised body met demise from complications related to sickle cell. On the surface it would appear as an attempt to soften what occurred, and indemnify the officers from their egregious behavior. These guards and medical professionals are bequeathed our utmost trust and confidence. Along with our coroners, they are all employed and expected to be thorough, accurate and unbiased.

During the 2006 Session, “The Martin Lee Anderson Act” was passed. The Act requires the Department of Juvenile Justice to set uniform standards for use of force and restraint. Additionally, it closed all Florida boot camps and will replace them with a friendlier approach to deter teens away from crime. The new system will be known as STAR Academies, or “Sheriff Training and Respect”. Governor Bush stated that he was “disturbed” by the medical examiner’s reports and considered the camp guards actions “deplorable”. The Governor is right, and his sentiments have been voiced by many since the video first aired. Maybe justice is ready; maybe accountability is ready, for their vacation to end! Let’s hope so.
